TDY to Maryland, 1211 191The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is well-known, and justly so, but it’s not the only such tomb in Arlington.

TDY to Maryland, 1211 181I was late for school, 2nd grade, the day Challenger exploded.  The entire building was silent except for someone talking on the intercom, and I didn’t have enough context to understand what was happening, only that it was bad.

The impossible takes a bit longer.

Arlington, DC, Seabees

The impossible takes a bit longerThe National Seabee Monument is along the drive (walk, in my case) to Arlington National Cemetery:

The SEABEE Memorial at Arlington, VA was sculpted by a former SEABEE, Felix de Weldon who also sculpted the world famous USMC Memorial, also at Arlington. The SEABEE Memorial has a number of large panels depicting the many missions that SEABEES have undertaken around the world, in war and peace since 1942.

Title is from the inscription along the bottom of the back panel:

With willing hearts and skillful hands, the difficult we do at once. The impossible takes a bit longer!
